Scale effect on the mechanical behavior of PLA specimens fabricated via Fused Deposition Modeling

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing processes in world. It also a rapid prototyping process that can fabricate physical model generated from CAD automatically without usage any tooling or fixture. In general, mechanical properties components produced with are dependent on geometry and scale fabricated part. Any change parts will influence underlying fabrication inherent characteristics such as internal porosity, residual stress, etc. Therefore, it important to understand connection between these their order improve design technique applicability technique. this study, effect performance PLA (Polylactic Acid) specimens via FDM technology has been investigated. A total number 15 test were three different scales, including 30%, 50%, 100% size suggested ASTM standard for tensile testing polymers. The properties, yield ultimate strength, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio elongation at failure determined, compared, analyzed uniaxial tests. addition, 2D digital image correlation (DIC) method was track full-field displacement strains surface specimens. Moreover, fracture surfaces use an optical microscope evaluate mechanisms tested experimental results revealed downscaling experience both lower strength failure. Furthermore, deviation increases when downscaling. This due fact first layer quality stress have more data uncertainty lower.
